Leadership Lesson #7: Be Useful

In the last of her 7 Leadership Lessons, Mary Oliver wanted to be known as helpful. In a collection of essays, she wrote “May I be the tiniest nail in the house of the universe, tiny but useful.” Do you wish to be useful?

I volunteer my time, primarily, because I like to be busy. I also do it because I like to be useful. I have gifts that can be beneficial to others. What gifts do you have?

Do you have a gift of organization? Do you like to meet and spend time with people? Do you like to see others succeed? There are positions still needed at the District level that can use those gifts!

The Area Director Requirements and Responsibilities:

  • Have experience as a Club President or VP of Education
  • Visit the clubs in your Area
  • Get to know the officers in the clubs and file reports
  • Help the clubs to succeed with encouragement
  • Deliver reports on your Area to the DEC
  • Become a leader at Club Officer Trainings and Contests

The Administration Manager Responsibilities:

  • This person should be detail oriented and work along side the Trio
  • Record minutes for the District Executive Committee (DEC) and the District Council meetings
  • Send previous agendas to all voting members before meetings
  • Create Agendas for meetings
  • Plan locations and refreshments for in-person meetings
  • Edit and publish events on the District 62 Website Calendar

BIG BONUS: These positions give you credit towards your DTM! Do you think you would be interested in either of these opportunities? If so, contact Laura St. Louis at dd@62toast.com for more information.
