Lesson #3: Learn From Your Pain
In her poem, “The Uses of Sorrow,” Mary Oliver wrote “Someone I loved once gave me a box full of darkness. It took me years to understand that this, too, was a gift.” As humans we learn from our pain. We also learn to get back up and try again. We learn to stretch ourselves beyond what we ever thought we were capable of achieving.
When I went to my first Toastmasters Conference in the fall of 2015, I remember thinking to myself that I wasn’t interested in District leadership. Less than a year later, that was exactly where I found myself. I had no idea what I had gotten myself into, but it was exciting!
After six years of service to the district, I have experienced joy, amazement, frustration, wonder, accomplishments, and sorrow. I am now entering my 7th year of District service and am looking forward to a year of the same.
