Lesson #5 KEEP IT SIMPLE

Mary Oliver’s work is easy to read and understand. Leadership should be the same way. Leaders should not make their coaching, instruction, or suggestions complicated. It is much better to keep things straightforward. In other words, keep it simple.

Have you taken the Leadership Style quiz in Pathways yet? I have taken this quiz three times. I have found my results interesting since the results have changed over the past 4 years. The first leadership quiz I took was in 2019 and I discovered I was an altruistic leader which is defined as “the guiding of others with the goal of improving their well-being or emotional state.”

The next two showed me to be a democratic leader which means I actively involved the people being lead. This tells me that when I joined the Trio in 2019, I went from being an altruistic leader as Club Growth Director to a democratic leader when I became District Director in 2020.

Leadership roles change people and the way they lead. You learn to lead for the situation you are in, but also for the people that you are working with. The best way to start this journey is through club leadership, but if you are looking to advance that skill, the next step is District leadership.
