The First of 7 Leadership Lessons On How To Forge Your Own Path

Forbes Magazine published an article entitled “7 Leadership Lessons From Mary Oliver on How to Forge Your Own Path” by Brianna Weist. Mary Oliver is a Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award winning poet whose works offer an insight into the world and our place in it. I was inspired by the 7 Leadership Lessons and want to share them with you each week.

Lesson #1: Your Life is What You Make it. 

The last line from her poem The Summer Day reads, “Tell me, what is it you plan to do with your wild and precious life?” According to the article, the line is saying each person needs to find their power and have vision. I understand this to say, “What do you want to be when you grow up?”

Even as a mature woman, I ask myself this question every day. I wonder where I will be 10 years from now. I will tell you that my time in Toastmasters has opened opportunities and skills I didn’t have when I joined eight years ago. These skills were learned at the club level and district level. Do you have skills you want to learn?
