#6 Worrying Solves Nothing

As Mary Oliver pointed out, worry robs you of joy. In her poem, I Worried, she says:

I worried a lot. Will the garden grow, will the rivers
flow in the right direction, will the earth turn
as it was taught, and if not how shall
I correct it?

Was I right, was I wrong, will I be forgiven,
can I do better? Will I ever be able to sing, even the sparrows
can do it and I am, well,
hopeless. Is my eyesight fading or am I just imagining it,
am I going to get rheumatism,
lockjaw, dementia? Finally I saw that worrying had come to nothing.
And gave it up. And took my old body
and went out into the morning,
and sang.

She was worrying about things outside of her control. I worry about things. I worry over whether I will find an Administration Manger. I worry about finding those last three Area Directors. I worry over whether we can achieve the goals the Trio has set for the year. These are things somewhat out of my control. What good is it doing me?

What I can, and continue to do, is recruit people for these roles and I rely on my team to do their jobs. I can provide assistance where it is needed to ensure goals are achieved. I know that it will all work out as intended.

If you are interested in advancing your leadership skills, I’d love to hear from you. The Administration Manager will take minutes at the District monthly Executive Committee meetings and the two District Council meetings. District 62 also needs 2 Area Directors for W Division and 1 for S Division. These job descriptions are better explained over the phone or via Zoom.

Why do I need Club Officer Training?

A critical element to creating a successful Toastmasters clubs is providing effective training for club leaders. When club officers are well-trained to perform their duties, club members are better served. This makes the member experience more positive, which leads to a quality club experience and increases member retention. Without properly trained leaders at every level, clubs cannot meet members’ needs or introduce the benefits of Toastmasters to others. Be sure to get this exciting opportunity on your calendar!
