Lesson #4 Only You Know What’s Best For You
One day you finally knew
what you had to do, and began,
though the voices around you
kept shouting
their bad advice –
thought the while house
began to tremble
and you felt the old tug
at your ankles.
“Mend my life!”
Each voice cried.
But you didn’t stop.
Mary Oliver wrote this poem as a “testimony to the power of trusting yourself, especially when there are so many other people around you trying to vie for your attention.” Mary Oliver is telling the reader that knowing what to do is not the same as being able to prioritize and putting your work first.
We all have many things vying for our attention. They can include kids, spouse, pets, parents, work, extracurricular activities, and Toastmasters. As the incoming District Director, I have masses of requests wanting my attention including finding people to be a part of the District Executive Committee (DEC).
I also understand that while you may want to be a part of the DEC, you have a lot of other things vying for your time and attention. What I can tell you is that becoming part of this committee is a way to develop yourself in ways you may not have imagined before.
I am so glad I answered the call in April of 2016 to be a part of the DEC. I hope you will consider it as well. If you want to learn more, please contact me at majaplus5@gmail.com.
